PHENIX
Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Layne and family from Lynchburg were guests in the home of W.C. Roach Sunday.
Mrs. Otis Locke of Eureka visited her son, H.F. Locke Tuesday afternoon.  Mrs. Lewis Locke and daughter, Phyllis Anne, visited in the home of R.C. Harvey the same afternoon.
Misses Margaret Anne and Eloise Wingfield and Mary Bohannon of Richmond, were week end guests of Mrs. J.L. Wingfield.
John Foster, has returned home after a week's visit with relatives in Newport News.
Rev. Willard Peake, of Chattanooga, Tenn., who is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peake at Rough Creek, will preach in the Rough Creek church next Sunday, September 10, at 11 a.m.
Miss Bertie Harvey, of Lynchburg, spent last week end here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Harvey, and sister, Mrs. Lewis Locke at Eureka.
Miss Elwyn Andrews, of Richmond is spending some time with relatives in and around Phenix.
Hugh Andrews, Jr., USA, left Thursday to report for duty at Camp Butner S.C., after spending his furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Andrews.
Mrs. J.L. Wingfield and daughters, Sue and Jean, spent several days last week with Mrs. Wingfield's brother, Henry Bohannon, near Fort Mitchell.
"Rock" Rogers of Richmond is spending some time with friends in Phenix.
Mrs. E.D. Carwile, who has been quite indisposed for several days is improving.  Mrs. George Blake and daughter, Anne Berkley, have returned to their home in Richmond after a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Carwile.
Mr. and Mrs. Nick Hamlett of Hampton and son, Maurice, USA, who is home on furlough visited relatives and friends in and around Phenix over the week end.
Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Canada and children of Waynesboro, were week end guests of E.B. Canada and family.
Misses Rita Musgrove and Elvira Morton have returned to their work in Richmond after lengthy visits with Mrs. Annie W. Morton and Mrs. Aline Musgrove.
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin C. Sours of Richmond receiving congratulations upon the arrival of a baby girl, September 2nd.  Mrs. Sours will be remembered as Miss Dorothy Lee Wingfield, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Wingfield here.
Private Ryland Watts, USA, son of Rev. and Mrs. C.H. Watts, formerly of Phenix, but now of Chase City, visited friends in Phenix Wednesday of this week.  Virginia Anne Watts spent the day with Elaine Tucker.  Ryland, who has been stationed at Camp Blanding, Florida, is spending his furlough with his parents.
Mrs. J.L. Wingfield and daughters, Sue and Jean, left Wednesday for Richmond where they will make their home from now on.
Mrs. Keith Hairfield of Roanoke spent last week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hamer.
Bernard L. Harvey, son of Mrs. and Mrs. R.C. Harvey, was promoted to the rank of Chief Quarter Master in the U.S. Navy on September 1st.  He has been serving for osme time on the U.S. Metivier in the Atlantic and Mediterean area.

PHENIX NEWS
Rev. J.E. Guthrie from Pearisburg, will preach in the Presbyterian church here the fifth Sunday morning, October 29th, at 11 o'clock sharp.  He will also preach at Rough Creek in the afternoon at 3:30 and at Hermon in the evening at 7:30.  The public is cordially invited to attend these services.
Misses Elvira Morton and Rita Musgrove of Richmond spent the week end here with Mrs. Annie W. Morton and Mrs. Aline Musgrove.
Misses Joe and Bertie Harvey of Lynchburg, Mrs. Lewis Locke and daughter, Phyllis Anne, of Eureka, spent Sunday, October 8th in the home of R.C. Harvey.
Miss Willie Margaret Andrews was hostess to the Girls Circle of Phenix Presbyterian Church last Thursday afternoon.  There was a good attendance and plans were made for a Halloween party the night of October 31st.
Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Harvey, Mrs. Lewis Locke and daughter, Phyllis spent last Monday in Lynchburg with Misses Jo and Bert Harvey.
The Phenix Garden Club met with Mrs. Gene Dixon Tuesday night, October 10th, with seven members present.  Mrs. Carwile led the program, which was on "Tulips."

Miss Lois Andrews of Washington, D.C., spent the week end here with her mother, Mrs. Carolyn Andrews.

Miss Martha Jane Pillow, of Washington, D.C., is spending her vacation with her mother, Mrs. Mattie Pillow.

Joe R. Canada left recently for the Navy and is taking his boot training at Great Lakes, ???

Mrs. R.C. Harvey spent last Thursday with Mrs. Lewis Locke at Eureka.

Ed Berkley of Richmond spent the week end in Phenix with relatives.  On Tuesday his mother, Mrs. Lizzie Berkley, accompanied him back to Richmond, where she will make her home in the future.

Hoyt Foster of Newport News, spent several days here with his family.

Sunday visitors in the home of Mr. and Mrs. S.R. Mayhew were Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Burton and two grandchildren, from Pittsylvania County; Mr. and Mrs. C.S. Nash and daughter, Dorothy, from Old Well; Mr. and Mrs. S.M. Holt and son, Elton, from Old Well; Mr. and Mrs. S.H. Holt, Roy Holt, Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Holt, from Aspen; Wallace Daubenspeck, U.S.A., and Mrs. Daubenspeck and Vivian Mayhew.

Mr. and Mrs. Ned Carwile from North Carolina spent last week with Mr. and Mrs. E.D. Carwile.
Miss Rita Musgrove spent Monday and Tuesday in Richmond and was accompanied home by Miss Elvira Morton who will spend the holidays in the home of her mother Mrs. Annie Morton.
Edgar Roberts left Sunday for Richmond to work.
J.D. Elliott of Norfolk spent the week end here with his family.  His daughter Miss Bessie Elliott is improving in Maryview Hospital in Portsmouth where she was taken after developing pneumonia.
Edgar Harvey of Roxboro spent last weekend here with his parents.  He will report back in Boston, Mass. where his orders will be waiting for him.
Walter Garber who works in Bristol spent the weekend here with his family.
Miss Eula Williams who teaches school in Carey N.C. is expected home this week to spend Christmas with her sister Miss Ida Williams and brother, W.G.
Miss Bertie Harvey of Lynchburg and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Locke and daughter Phyllis Anne, were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. P.C. Harvey.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Clarke and Mrs. Ned Gilliam went to Portsmouth last Wednesday to see Mr. and Mrs. L.R. Gilliam who had just received the message that their son Ryland  (Dick as he was known to his friends) has been missing in Belgium since December 16th. Mr. Clark returned to his home here Thursday and he and Ned Gilliam went back to Portsmouth Saturday afternoon.  All of them returned to Phenix Sunday with Mrs. L.R. Gilliam accompanying them.  She is with her sister Mrs. Frank Clark at present.
Mrs. W.W. Daubenspeck left Sunday to be near her husband Sgt. W.W. Daubenspeck who is in a camp in Mississippi.
Mr. and Mrs. George Walker, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Walker and family moved to Volens in Halifax County last week.
M. (Mr.) and Mrs. R.C. Harvey spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Locke in Eureka.
Mrs. J.E. Robinson of Richmond spent the week end with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Roach.
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. M. Berkley of Victoria visited relatives here last Sunday.
Mrs. Reed Berkley of Richmond visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. Otis Bailey during the week end.
Misses Elvira Morton and Rita Musgrove of Richmond and Miss Nan Musgrove and Charles Ehrig of Farmville spent the week end with Mrs. Annie W. Morton and Mrs. Aline Musgrove.
Miss Alice Davis of Farmville, S.T.C., and Miss Jane Davis of Petersburg were guests of Mr. W.R. Davis and Mrs. H.F. Gilliam, Saturday and Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. T.L. Sims and family of Richmond spent a week end at their home here recently.
Pvt. and Mrs. Reed Berkley of South Carolina and Mrs. Lizzie Berkley and son Ed of Richmond visited relatives and friends in Phenix last week.
Miss Sue Wingfield of Richmond is visiting Miss Edith Foster.  Clifford Harvey G.M. 3-c U.S.N. is spending his leave here with his parents Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Harvey.  Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Locke and daughter Phyllis Anne of Eureka, Misses Bertie and Jo Harvey of Lynchburg visited in the same home Sunday.
N.L. Adams, Jr., U.S.A., who has been serving overseas is home with his parents Mr. and Mrs. N.L. Adams, Sr., for the Christmas holidays.
Mrs. J.L. Wingfield of Richmond was in town last Friday.
Mr. E.D. Carwile who has been ill in Richmond has returned to his home here much improved.
Dr. S.C. Hatcher of Ashland spent several days last week at his home "Airmont" near here.
Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Elliotte spent the week end of the 10th in Lynchburg and Altavista.
Robert Canada of Waynesboro was a recent visitor in the home of his brother E.B. Canada.
Mrs. Aline Musgrove was hostess to the Garden club Monday evening December 11th.  She was leader of the program on Christmas Decorations, etc.  A splendid program was rendered ending with a contest pertaining to a Christmas menu.  Miss Bessie Berkley and Mrs. Annie W. Morton were the winners.  Refreshments were served by the hostess.
Mrs. Helen Moore, Miss Lorene Branch, Mrs. Geo. Carden, Mrs. Theresa Wallace and Mrs. R.C. Harvey were Lynchburg visitors last Saturday.
