NELSON IRVING THARPE
SERGEANT
U.S. ARMY, World War II

Nelson Irving Tharpe, was born and raised in Charlotte County on 1 May 1924; the son of Nelson E. and Mary Daniel Tharpe. He was educated in the Charlotte County school system.
Nelson enlisted in
the army
on 26 April 1943 in Richmond, Virginia as a Private; and was assigned
to a
Rifle Infantry Combat Division, where he saw action in France, and
other areas
of the European Theatre as well as in Scotland.

Nelson returned to
his native Charlotte and married Bessie Thelma
Lankford on 29 November 1952, a union which lasted 54 years.

Nelson died on 2
September
2006 and was laid to rest in the cemetery of Lebanon United Methodist
Church where
he was a lifelong member.
