A Salute To Our Service, Fire & Police Personnel - June 2018

Staff Sergeant - U.S. Army Air Corps, WWII

Grover L. Sheldon,  born: Mar. 28, 1919 in Chesterfield County, VA. - died:
May 25, 1988 in Prince Edward County, VA.  He was the son of Sidney Gaylord and Ada Rudd Sheldon.

After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and subsequent declaration of war, many of our nation's men and women stepped forward in defense of our country. "Buck" Sheldon was one of these courageous individuals and on Jan. 13, 1942, in Richmond, Va. he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Private. Grover was assigned to a B-17 bomber group as a Ground Radar Technician and by the end of his enlistment he had obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant.

After the war "Buck" came to Charlotte County where he met and married Frances G. Dixon on May 8, 1946.  He was a prominent figure in the county for the next 40 plus years where he and Frances owned and managed Sheldon's Restaurant and Motor Court.  Well known for their hospitality and southern charm, many a delicious meal and restful night has been enjoyed on these premises.

Grover departed this life on May 25, 1988 and was interred in Ash Camp Memorial Cemetery in Keysville, VA.

Thank you Grover for your service to our country and our county!
